image SRINAGAR: Uninterrupted curfew restrictions continued for the fourth day on Tuesday in Kashmir Valley to prevent violence in the wake of Afzal Guru's hanging in New Delhi's Tihar jail. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he would help arrange a visit to the parliament attack convict's family to offer prayers at his grave.

image ALLAHABAD: The death toll in the stampede at Allahabad railway station reached 36 today, with 14 more people succumbing to their injuries.

The incident occurred near the foot overbridge on platform number 6. The stampede, which took place at around 8.00pm, also left many persons severely injured. Sources said majority of victims killed were elderly persons.

The tragic incident, reports said, took place when more than 1.5 lakh devotees thronged Allahabad junction to board return trains for their respective destinations after Mauni Amavasya Snan. The massive rush of devotees resulted in the breaking of railing on foot overbridge and subsequently the stampede.

image NEW DELHI: Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged on Saturday morning, walked to the gallows in a peaceful and composed frame of mind.

"He was very peaceful and calm during the final moments. He looked very composed," a top Tihar Jail official said.

The official said Guru's family was informed about the execution.

Guru spent over 10 years on death row in the Tihar prison. He was convicted in the audacious attack on Parliament in 2001.

  KOLKATA: Climate change is threatening the survival of a number of Asian bird species, including those in India, a new study warns.

The research conducted by Durham University and BirdLife International says that many avian species from the region are likely to suffer from climate change.

The species will require not just enhanced protection of important and protected sites, but also better management of the wider countryside, the study says.

image NEW DELHI: In fresh trouble to Sahara group, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is free to freeze accounts and seize properties of its two companies for defying court orders by not refunding Rs 24,000 crore to investors.

The apex court also pulled up Sebi for not taking action against the companies — Sahara India Real Estate Corporation (SIREC) and Sahara Housing Investment Corporation (SHIC) — as per its August 31, 2012 order which had asked it to attach properties and freeze bank accounts of the companies.
