Green tea is rich in catechin polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallage (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful antioxidant. Green tea is processed differently than other teas; the leaves are steamed which retains the EGCG. In the brewing of regular tea, the EGCG is oxidized. In addition to the health benefits, green tea is also helpful in losing weight. Drinking five cups of green tea a day can burn 70 to 80 calories. The catechins increase the levels of norepinephrine, which speeds up metabolism.
