Before marriage, you were just like a pair of lovebirds. Marriage however is nothing what you imagined it to be. The good news is that there is no need to despair. Your spouse loves you very much and with a little bit of effort, you can get the romance back and keep the romance going strong forever irrespective of age.

When watching your favorite romantic movie, you may be led to believe that marriage suppose to be that fairytale. Well, it may start out that way but over time most couples begin to take each other for granted and get so caught up with day-to-day life that they stop making efforts to nurture their marriage. As human beings who are emotional by nature, we may find it difficult over time to stay in a marriage that doesn’t place importance on spending quality time together. No matter how busy life becomes, your spouse is the first person who is likely to support you and be there for you no matter what. Keeping romance in your marriage is not a difficult task, and with a little bit of effort, you can keep the spark alive and burning with seven simple steps.

Say good morning

When you get up in the morning, don’t simply push back the covers and dash off to the bathroom to get ready for another long day. Take one minute to kiss your spouse and say ‘Good Morning’. Before leaving for work give your spouse a hug and say that you’re waiting to spend some time together in the evening. Throw in a compliment every once in a while. It’s a great way to begin your day and make your spouse feel loved at the same time.

Become teenagers again! Go on a date

Who said that dating was only for teenagers? Choose one night every week where you and your spouse go out for dinner, catch a movie, or anything exclusive of kids or others. Spending time together gives you both a chance to reconnect, talk and enjoy each other. The great part about it is that you get to have twice the fun with no worries of late night deadlines like you did as teenagers! Having at least one meal together a week without any disturbances will help you both unwind the right way.

Be spontaneous

Couples usually complain about how predictable a routine becomes over time and there’s nothing better to jazz things up a bit than thinking outside the box. Send your spouse a sms saying ‘I love you’ at work. Drop in for lunch at your spouse’s workplace (make sure he/she doesn’t have any meetings scheduled at that time). How about writing a short poem and keeping it in a place where your spouse is sure to see it? What about lighting a few scented candles in the house and preparing a surprise dinner? How about turning up some music and dancing or even going for a walk hand in hand? There’s really no limit to the number of spontaneous things you can do.

Give unexpected gifts

You don’t have to wait till Valentine’s Day, a birthday or an anniversary to give something small to your spouse. A gift doesn’t have to be anything expensive, but it makes a spouse feel special. A box of chocolates, flowers, a card, breakfast in bed, tickets to a box office hit movie; shows how much you care.

Spend time in prayer

“Couples that pray together stay together!” Couples that spend time together in prayer are closer and emotionally stronger than those that don’t. Spending even a few minutes together in prayer every day will increase your closeness as a couple and give you strength to get over life’s low points.

Get fit together

Couples that exercise together are more likely to stick with exercise regimes and in turn live healthier lives? There are so many ways to get fit. Go for a nice brisk walk together, enjoy a swim, play a game of tennis or hit the gym together. It’s a great way to spend some time together and get in shape at the same time!

Communicate all problems

The most important thing to do when either of you have issues is to talk about it. Don’t always assume that your partner knows what you are going through. Talking helps to clear misunderstandings, get your point across and plan a solution as well. Avoid going to bed angry or upset after a quarrel with your partner. It will only spoil your mood when you awake the next day.

With some invested thought and time, nothing can stop you from writing your own romantic fairy tale. Remember; the success of a marriage is greatly dependent upon the efforts put forth by both parties involved each and every day.
