The details that follow were shared either by the 52-year-old industrialist himself or by the many fans and followers that have traced his life- from the dusty alleys of the Mumbai chawl he spent his youth at to the hallowed portals of Wharton Business School to the creation of his phenomenally successful business empire.

As a young man in 1959, Anil Ambani lived at Jai Hind Estate in a chawl called Kabutar khana.

His residence was a modest 1-BHK that accommodated seven people, including his then alive grandmother Kokilaben Ambani.

The young Anil Ambani travelled by public transport quite frequently. In a television interview, he said he led a modest lifestyle for a fairly long part of his life.

He and his elder brother, Mukesh, even had to share a wardrobe at one point in time!

On a vacation to the US, a 15-year-old Anil and his parents visited the Niagara Falls. While returning to New York City, Anil stepped out of the car at a petrol pump to get some water.

When he returned, he found the car’s door locked. His father Dhirubhai handed him a $10 note and told him to return to NYC on his own.

Anil hitchhiked his way back to the city in three days. In a television interview, he recalled this episode as an important lesson in self-confidence from his father.

As a young man, Anil enjoyed street food and liked meals at Udipi too. He enjoyed 'junk food' till he took up seriously took up running.
 
He eats healthy, preferring fruits, juices, and bajra or jawar roti.  He also stays away from white products such as iodised salt, refined flour, sugar and milk products. 
 
Anil doesn't drink or smoke.

Anil Ambani married Bollywood actor Tina Munim. They have two sons, Jai and Anmol.
