image Melbourne: Malarial parasites resistant to existing drugs may have a difficult time soon, as researchers have now developed a compound that blocks the action of a key 'gatekeeper' enzyme essential for malaria parasite survival.

The compound, called WEHI-916, is the first step toward a new class of anti-malarial drugs that could cure and prevent malaria infections caused by all species of the parasite, including those resistant to existing drugs.

Researchers developed WEHI-916 to block the critical malaria enzyme Plasmepsin V.

image New York, United State: Weekly consumption of sports drinks and energy drinks among teens is linked to higher consumption of other sugar-sweetened beverages, cigarette smoking, and screen media use, said a study.

Sports and energy drink consumption should be addressed as part of a clustering of unhealthy behaviours among some adolescents, the researchers noted.

“Among boys, weekly sports drink consumption was significantly associated with higher TV viewing,” said Nicole Larson of University of Minnesota in the US.

image Toronto,Canada: Babies, who are most susceptible to cavities in the early years of their lives, are least likely to get dental care even though they need it the most, a study has found.

Prolonged bottle use, especially at night, and sweetened drinks are suspected risk factors for cavities because the carbohydrates in the beverages promote the growth of the bacteria that causes cavities, said Jonathon Maguire, a paediatrician at St Michael's Hospital in Canada.

Of the 2,505 children around four years of age who were surveyed from 2011-13 for the study, 39 percent had never been to a dentist, the findings showed.

image Washington, United States of America: A new study has revealed that children who live in regions of the world where malaria is common can mount an immune response to infection with malaria parasites.

According to the study, that the immune response may enable kids to avoid repeated bouts of high fever and illness and partially control the growth of malaria parasites in their bloodstream.

image New York, U.S.:Replacing red meat portions in your diet with vegetables may be a good recipe for your heart as scientists have now discovered a strong association between heme iron, found only in meat, and potentially deadly coronary heart disease.

There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and non-heme.

The study found no association between non-heme iron, which is found in plants and other non-meat sources, and coronary heart disease.

Heme iron consumption increased the risk for coronary heart disease by 57 percent, the study warned.
