1. Harvard University

Harvard University’s medical school is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and is ranked as the number one medical college in the world, according to the 2010 rannking published in "U.S. News & World Report" magazine. Harvard Medical School was established in 1782 and has many Nobel laureates.
 

Since the school was established in 1782, faculty members have improved human health by innovating in their roles as physicians, mentors and scholars. They’ve piloted educational models, developed new curricula to address emerging needs in health care, and produced thousands of leaders and compassionate caregivers who are shaping the fields of science and medicine throughout the world with their expertise and passion.

 

2. University of Cambridge

With more than 18,000 students from all walks of life and all corners of the world, nearly 9,000 staff, 31 Colleges and 150 Departments, Faculties, Schools and other institutions, no two days are ever the same at the University of Cambridge.

At the heart of this confederation of Departments, Schools, Faculties and Colleges is a central administration team. It is small because the Colleges are self-governing and teaching staff carry out much of the daily administration at Cambridge.

The University is governed through central bodies, principally the Regent House, the Council and the General Board of the Faculties. These bodies include representatives from across the University.

 

3. Yale Univercity

Founded in 1810, the Yale School of Medicine is a world-renowned center for biomedical research, education and advanced health care.

Among its divisions are one of the nation’s oldest schools of public health and the internationally recognized Child Study Center, founded in 1911. Its Yale Cancer Center is one of 41 comprehensive cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute. Its 33 academic departments include 11 in the basic sciences, 19 in clinical fields, and 5 in public health.

Affiliated institutions include the 1,541-bed Yale-New Haven Hospital—flagship of the Yale New Haven Health System and one of the largest hospitals in the United States since acquisition of the Saint Raphael campus—and the Connecticut Mental Health Center.

 

4. Univercity College of London

UCL Medical School is committed to excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate education and has a strong reputation for teaching informed by cutting-edge research. The School has a distinguished cadre of academic staff who are at the forefront of international research in biomedical sciences, medical education and clinical medicine. The Medical School aims to provide the seamless high quality education of medical students from admission to graduation; to enhance the status of learning and teaching within the Medical School; and to support and advise on the relevant facilities and resources underpinning medical education.

It also provides postgraduate education locally, nationally and internationally and promotes scholarship and excellence in medical education delivery and research.

 

5. Imperial College London

 

The Faculty of Medicine is one of Europe’s largest medical institutions – in terms of its staff and student population and its research income.

Established in 1997, it brings together all the major West London medical schools into one world-class institution. It maintains close links with a number of NHS Trusts with whom it collaborates in teaching and research activities.

Although on several sites, its academic divisions function as one Faculty, fully integrated within the College. The current Dean, Professor Dermot Kelleher, took up his appointment on 1 October 2012.

 

 

6. University of Oxford

The University of Oxford in England is one of the oldest universities in England and is tied in 5th place with the Imperial College of London on the list of the best colleges in the world.

Oxford University offers a large range of degrees in its Medical Sciences Division, such as neuroscience, diagnostic imaging, clinical embryology and more.

7. University of Chicago

Dr. Holly J. Humphrey is Professor of Medicine and Dean for Medical Education at the University of Chicago. In this role, she oversees medical education for students in the Pritzker School of Medicine and for residents and fellows in graduate medical education programs at the University of Chicago Medical Center. 

A 1983 Honors graduate of the Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Humphrey completed her internal medicine residency and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at The University of Chicago before joining the faculty in 1989.  For fourteen years, she served as Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program before moving to her current position in 2003.  In 2006, Dr. Humphrey became the first clinician-educator at The University of Chicago awarded tenure.

 

8. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

About 10 percent of the U.S. population suffers from dyslexia, a condition that makes learning to read difficult. Dyslexia is usually diagnosed around second grade, but the results of a new study from MIT could help identify those children before they even begin reading, so they can be given extra help earlier.

The study, done with researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital, found a correlation between poor pre-reading skills in kindergartners and the size of a brain structure that connects two language-processing areas.

Situated on a 20-acre campus in Northern Manhattan and accounting for roughly half of Columbia University's nearly $3 billion annual budget, Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) provides global leadership in scientific research, health and medical education, and patient care.

CUMC’s major teaching hospital affiliates are NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute, both of which share the CUMC campus. The medical center also has academic affiliations with the Harlem Hospital Medical Center, operated by the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation; Bassett Healthcare, in Cooperstown, NY; St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center, in New York City; the Isabella Geriatric Center, in New York City; and Arnot Ogden Medical Center, in Elmira, NY.
