image   New Delhi, Jan 22 : Transmission infrastructure firm Alstom T&D India Wednesday said it has got a contract worth Rs. 106 crore from Reliance Industries (RIL) to provide power transformer packages for the expansion of RIL's Jamnagar refinery in Gujarat.

"The contract is part of an ongoing expansion known as J3, which denotes phase three expansion of the Jamnagar complex," Alstom said in a filing to the BSE.

The company said the scope of the new contract includes designing, engineering, manufacturing, supply, supervision of erection, and commissioning of 14 gasification service transformers and three generator step-up transformer package

image   Mumbai, Jan 22 : Engineering and construction conglomerate Larsen and Toubro (L&T) Wednesday posted a net profit growth of 10.6 percent at Rs. 1,241 crore for the third quarter ending December over the same quarter a year ago.

Revenues jumped 11.8 percent year-on-year to Rs. 14,387.5 crore in the quarter ended December 2013.

With the exceptional gain on dilution of part stake in a subsidiary company, adjusted profit after tax went up over 22 percent during the quarter.  L&T transferred hydrocarbon business to its subsidiary L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering with effect from April 1, 2013.

image   Washington, Jan 21 : Microsoft is reportedly planning to end support for Windows XP on April 8th this year, which will affect 95 percent of world's automated teller machine that runs on the operating system.

An upcoming Windows XP support change from Microsoft will result in upgradation of ATMs around the world.

According to NCR, the largest ATM supplier in the US, Microsoft had issued warnings to customers about the deadline for years, but the ATM industry remained nonchalant, Verge reported.

image   Washington, Jan 21 : Apple, with its latest iPhone 5S and 5C models, reportedly broke sales record of 50 million units in the last quarter, market analysts have estimated.

The tech giant is expected to release its fourth quarter results in the coming week but analysts have already estimated the sales to be around 55.3 million units of the latest versions of Apple's flagship product.

According to Mashable, although, it is not unusual for Apple to break an iPhone sales record, as it has been achieving that since 2010 for its Q1 results, but breaking into the 50-million range is new territory for Apple.

image Amazon Seller Services India Private Limited on Monday announced the launch of its second Fulfillment Centre India. The new facility, which will become operational by February this year, is located near Bangalore.

The renowned retailer's second Fulfillment Centre in India is spread over 150,000 square feet of floor area. It is a multi-level, secure facility that can stock and store millions of products across a number of categories from sellers using 'Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)' platform.

In other words, Amazon Fulfillment Centers are storehouses where online retailers who use FBA services, and stock the inventory of their various products.

Dozens of South Korean bank and credit-card executives offered to resign Monday over the theft of personal information belonging to more than 100 million cardholders.

The executives at KB Financial Group, NongHyup Financial Group and Lotte Group sought to take responsibility for the breach after a single engineer whose firm, Korea Credit Bureau, was hired by all three financial companies, allegedly stole the sensitive information. Phone numbers, email and home addresses and card numbers were among the data stolen.

image The shares of Best Buy Co.  Inc fell significantly on Thursday after the company said that its revenues fell during the holiday period this year.

Investors were disappointed with the sales as they were expectinmg an increase in the holiday season sale for the company.  The retailer said that its U. S. sales, those at stores and online operations open at least 14 months, fell 0.9 percent compared to a market expectation of an increase of 0.7 percent.

image The Indian unit of Isuzu Motors has said that it is planning to invest Rs 3,000 crore at its manufacturing plant in Andhra Pradesh.

A senior company official said that the company will make the investment during the coming five years in the south Indian state.  The company will begin the construction for the plant at Sri City this month, according to, Isuzu Motors India president and managing director Takashi Kikuchi.

"As a first step, we will have a production capacity of 50,000 when we start production in 2016.  Within three years, we will try to increase to 80,000.  That is 2018-19.  By 2020, we would like to increase further up to 10

image Washington, Jan 17 : Intel has said that the company could see "signs of stabilization" for the traditional computer market with its fourth quarter PC sales getting a boost of around two percent to 8.6 billion dollars.

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said that he foresees the PC market starting to stabilize because the company pulled in the same amount of money from PCs this time last year, and he thinks Intel chips are a pretty decent measure of how well the PC industry is doing.

He said that the company sold seven percent more desktop PC chips in the fourth quarter, the Verge reports.

image London, Jan 16 : Following his indictment on bribery charges in Germany, Formula 1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has stepped down from the company's board but will continue to run the sport.

A Munich court Thursday decided to put the 83-year-old on trial for allegedly bribing German banker Gerhard Gribkowsky with $45 million before the sale of a stake in F1 in 2006.

The trial will take place most likely in April and Ecclestone will not be part of the board until the case is resolved.

image According to the latest figures released, the annual inflation fell to the level of 2 per cent during the month of December as the central bank kept its interest rates at a lower rate.

image Barratt Developments, a leading home builder in the UK, has said that it expects its sales to rise 71 per cent to nearly £1.3 billion in the first half of its financial year.

The company also said that it is optimistic of strong performance in the second half of the year.  The company, which recently announced 780 new homes across the west of Scotland, has benefitted from price rises and increased sales in the country.  The country's housing sector has recorded growth due to supportive schemes from the government.  Demand for housing units remained much higher than availability and this pushed up prices across the UK including in southern England.

image JPMorgan Chase, the largest bank in the US, has said that it has recorded a fall of 1.1 per cent to $24.1 billion during the quarter.

The bank said that its net income fell 16 per cent to $17.9 billion in 2013 while its earnings fell to $5.3 billion in the fourth quarter from $5.7 billion during the same period of the previous year.  Chief executive Jamie Dimon is working to speed up legal fallout of the financial crisis and other scandals.  The bank is facing huge penalties arising from its involvement in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme and involvement in the 2008 financial crisis.

image Coal India shares gained more than 5 per cent to hit a two-month high in early trade on Wednesday, thanks to the announcement of an interim dividend by the company.

The state-run miner on Tuesday announced that it would pay shareholders a special dividend of Rs 29 per share in the current financial year.  The special dividend will be paid from 25th of January.

The biggest shareholder - the government that owns 90 per cent stake in the company, will receive Rs 16,485.71 crore as dividend.  The company has set aside Rs 18,317 crore to pay in dividend for FY2013-14.

image NIIT Technologies on Tuesday reported a year-on-year fall of more than 5 per cent in its quarterly consolidated net profit as the Mumbai-based software firm suffered a loss in other income.

The company said its consolidated net profit slipped 5.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 53.1 crore in the October-December quarter of 2013.

The mid-tier software firm's net profit slipped despite a rise of 14.2 per cent in its consolidated revenue, which jumped from to Rs 587.3 crore in the October-December quarter compared with Rs 514.4 crore in the same quarter of 2012-13.

The FT-1 concept, which stands for 'Future Toyota', was unveiled at the Detroit motor show.

image (Reuters) - The data breach at Target Corp over the holiday shopping season was far bigger than initially thought, the U.S. company said on Friday, as state prosecutors announced a nationwide probe into the second-biggest retail cyber attack on record.

Target said an investigation found that hackers stole the personal information of at least 70 million customers, including names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers and email addresses. Previously, the No. 3 U.S. retailer said the hackers stole data from 40 million credit and debit cards.
